Archives for Living Green category

You may have seen this on The Today Show this morning. This family’s lifestyle is so extreme you will either think they are Charlie-Sheen-Crazy or you will find their commitment to being ‘green’ an example to live up to.

Opinions on Bea and Scott Johnson’s lifestyle have been polarizing. The reporter actually said she thinks some will feel guilt after watching this families commitment to leaving absolutely no footprint on this planet. Another critic said, “This lifestyle may be a love letter to mother earth, but it’s hate mail addressed to the creativity of man. If everyone had lived like this since history began we’d have no Botticelli canvases, no illuminated manuscripts, and none of the countless personal diaries that documented great historical eras. … If this family’s ideal is to compost into a natural oblivion like a heap of banana peels, great. But the kind of world they are working to create isn’t one worth preserving.”

I think most of us fall into the middle of those two opinions. As in everything in life..there are always extremists. I applaud them for making no trash and keeping useless purchases to a minimum. We all know we all have too much junk. But there is no way I could limit my family keepsakes to one photo album and you will never, ever, ever, ever catch me carrying glass jars into my local Kroger for meat. She obviously didn’t do this when her kids were small or she would have been going through 18 glass jars a week. I can just see the boy trying to help me at the checkout dropping jar after jar of raw meat and cheese on the floor.
